Sparking constructive thinking about defense, security, and democracy protection
Nonviolent movements inevitably emerge to counter aggression and injustice, becoming more organized and strategic with time. Their protagonists, civil society and ordinary people, use collective action to leverage power in ways institutions and armies cannot, sometimes referred to as “political jiu jitsu”. While social scientists have been studying this phenomenon since the 1960s, it has deep roots across the centuries and in nearly all country histories.
ONM’s mission is to advance a better understanding of nonviolent movements, their methods, and their track record for protecting freedom, human dignity, and security. Our geographic focus is France, Europe, Ukraine, and Africa.
In an era marked by uncertainty, nonviolent movements and their unarmed methods of resisting the usurpation of power strengthen our democracies’ resilience, sustainability, and autonomy.
